    Dear Community,

Has anyone renamed their office within the past two years? If so, can you share what it was formerly called and what it is called now?

We are currently called The Career Center and I’m looking for comparative data to support my proposal for a new name. Thank you in advance.

    Hi, Susan,

We re-named our office last year to go along with a substantial overhaul in our service model and philosophy. We were formerly the Career Development Office (known as the CDO); our office is now the Career Hub (the Hub). The formal name of our career services program is called Career Education and Professional Advancement to reflect the wide range of work we do with prospective students through alumni. So, our offices are located in the Hub and that is how students know and refer to us. But in formal communication and on our business cards, we are Career Education and Professional Advancement.

These names emerged from focus groups with students, some alumni, partners in the school, ending with our deans making the final decision. Please let me know if you have questions about that process, I'm happy to discuss.

We're changing ours, big time, at JHU. We were previously the Career Center, and are changing to the Life Design Lab. We originally considered Career and Life Design. Such a big change is going to be a bit of a hassle for branding, so I'd be glad to share how it goes over the next six months!

    Hi Susan,

We were Career Services a few years ago. Currently "Career Development" however, we are now going to be "CCEC" -"Career Coaching, Employer Connections" department.

This is after a consultant group did a 1-year study of the current state, best practices, and surveyed stakeholders. We are piloting bringing together our workforce program and career development program together into one department.

    Good luck,

    Hi Susan,

Our office was previously called Career Services, and we are now Career & Professional Development (or the Office of Career and Professional Development).

Hope this helps - I am pretty in the office, but would be happy to look into more information on how our name change went if that would be helpful. Good luck with your proposal!

I would also be interested in this information. We are just Career Services and our office really would like to change it to something incorporating Professional Development.

Thank you Susan for putting this question out to the Community.  We are a community college and are in the midst of rebranding our Career Planning Center, The challenge to select the best name to convey our mission, vision, goals, services, and growth as we are incorporated into California's Guided Pathways has been quite a task.  We have a robust Career Technical Education program at our college, and there has been some confusion recently between the two different departments.  We are looking at rebranding to be the Majors and Careers Program.

Our office was called Career Services and last year we changed the name to the Internship & Career Planning Office. Our university has a large push for internships, so it was important to us for that to be incorporated in the name.

We are a small private university, so our office is housed within a Center that encompasses Academic Advising and Disability Resources. This one-stop shop approach is extremely helpful and beneficial for our students as they often finish up an appointment with their advisor and then walk over to my office to find an internship for credit that they can build into their educational plan.

The center was called, "The Learning Center" but has been renamed to the "Center for Academic & Professional Success" (CAPS). We like to say, "Come to CAPS often enough and you'll get your cap and gown!" Corny but effective!

We were originally the Career Center, and then it was changed to Career Development Center, then later to Career and Transfer Center. This was confusing to people as they'd contact me for transcripts and unrelated request. So I switched back to Career Center. It's easy to say on the phone and people know what we do. I am a one person office who serves students and community in a community college so need things need to be simple, serving, and swift!

We are a small Christian, Liberal Arts, work college and as of now we use the title "Career Center."   We are exploring the name change to incorporate the word "vocation.  The college has a five-fold mission, and one of the goals is vocation. By reflecting this goal, we want to help all stakeholders to understand that our student's vocation is more than employment.  It is a more holistic view of our purpose to serve through and in our employment.

    Hi Susan,

Thanks for posting this discussion. We're in a similar situation and plan to re-name our career centre this academic year - new name TBD. We are currently called the Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre and we serve around 4,500 undergraduate and graduate students within the university's business school. Our goal for re-naming is to better align our brand to our new strategic plan and model, which emphasizes both personal and professional development support.

    Good luck,

    Hi Susan,

I posted this for Emily in a separate thread and thought that you might find it helpful.
We updated/changed our name approximately two years ago.

A bit of history, we are a multi-campus institution. Before the change, we had two different career offices serving students based on their campus location. Previously our Atlanta office was the Office of Career Management, and the Macon office was the Office of Career Services. The two offices functioned independently with two different directors, two webpages, separate resources, etc. but all for one institution. So not quite decentralized (in the traditional sense by college or major) but also not centralized.

Approximately 2.5-3 years ago, we began the discussion of merging our offices to present a more united front, share resources, and spread the workload. This merge brought on not only a name change but a leadership change and new collateral assignments. In the end, we decided on the "Center for Career and Professional Development" to reflect our emphasis on lifelong learning and skill development. We serve Alumni for life and have traditional but also many post-traditional students, so it was important for our staff to have a name that reflected our work.

In terms of picking the name, we did some peer research, looked at other names, did a bit of brainstorming, and finally decided on our final pick. It was nothing scientific. However, in the launch of our new center, we have been intentional with branding and messaging (along with removing dated language) to drive the point home. It also helped that we re-did our website and simultaneously launched handshake (thus pushing us to update all old information with new logos and branding).

If you would like any additional information, please feel free to reach out!

We renamed our Office last August. We moved from Career Service to Career Engagement Office. This accurately reflects what our office does. - moving away from transactional work to more transformational. Such as Career and Identity, discernment, developmental/educational work.

we have just changed from Career Development Center to Career Connections Center after polling our students, which is more in line with what we do.

We are undergoing a name change right now.  We will transition from University Career Services to Office of Career Exploration and Success (or just stylized as Career Exploration and Success in less formal settings). This change comes after a deliberate and intentional process conducted by the working group, which included peer benchmarking, staff input, and an assessment of first-year and sophomore student perceptions and preferences.  The new name also reflects our staff's holistic approach to career development. For your reference, you can download our working group final report here. We ended up dropping the term "center" in the end since it turns out that phrase is reserved for certain types of organizations on our campus.
